I always add that, to succeed in life, we need people who believe in us when we fail to believe in ourselves. They are the ones that give you the strength to keep on keeping on.

I have been incredibly lucky to find a team that I can proudly call my “tribe.” They have inspired so much me since the beginning.

We believe in the power of hard work and determination, and we believe in teamwork because, as Helen Keller said: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Spotlight: Bestselling Author Laura DiBenedetto Talks about The Six Habits

Two weeks ago, I read The Six Habits, #1 bestselling book by Laura DiBenedetto, TEDx speaker, success coach, podcaster, educator, and researcher. The book is currently ranking #1 in Behaviour, #1 in Behavioral Psychology, and #1 in Journaling.

The book was raw, practical and extremely useful. These habits resonated so much with me that I reached out to the author about being interviewed by Utility Avenue. She agreed, so in our weekly spotlight, we want to share her wisdom.

Who is Laura DiBenedetto?

I am an average human. I’m a curious, creative person, and I like to help.

When I found myself close to retiring and discovered life was not what I thought it would be, I wanted to solve that problem. I did not set out to write a book, but in answering it, I was like, “woohoo, I can give this to other people.” I was excited to share it. The book was the byproduct of changing my own life massively. I wanted to invite others into the life they’ve always dreamed of but didn’t think they could have. 

How did it all begin?

The desire for the book came from being remarkably unhappy, and just not being okay with that. I did so much: I started a marketing company at 19. For years, I worked so hard to build the life someone else told me was going to bring me all the happiness and satisfaction. When I got there, and I had checked all the boxes, I said, “Okay, give me…”. It wasn’t there.  

I was upset and got sick and tired of doing this whole self-help work: I bought all the programs and read all the books, and I was still unhappy. I wanted to solve that. In the process, I found such a massive transformation in my own life that I wanted to share it with others. I had to do more than just write a few sentences and ask people, “Do this magic recipe.” That’s how the book was born.

Besides, I created a 90-day program. It’s great to know about the Six Habits but, without mastery, life will be no different. That’s the real work we need to do. Can you master it on your own? Yeah, you can. It will be easy if you are disciplined about it and work with the science of habits. But I am a stubborn human being, and I don’t want to do the things that are good for me: eat my veggies, or floss, or say “no” to the cake.

There are a lot of programs out there that promise permanent change in 21 days, in 30 days. It’s all a lie. They just want to take your money. My program might look harder on the outside because it’s 90 days, but that’s science. I am not telling you what you want to hear; I’m telling you the truth. If you’re going to be set free, you need 66 days of repetitious activity to build the muscle.

What helped you the most to become a number 1 best-selling author?

I would say, number one: going through an incredible amount of hardship and surviving. It showed me that I am a lot stronger than I thought. I was going through the rough things you read about in the book, like abuse and bullying. Two, my parents are organically resilient people. They are stubborn and problem-solvers — my dad is an inventor. They are both extremely remarkable human beings, with very different things they bring to life, to themselves, to their marriage and their family. I learned a lot from them, from watching them exist but also from how they raised me. My mom always told me, “You can do anything.” “I believe in you.” “You’re always good enough.” “You’re beautiful,” and “You’re special.” The world did not say those things, but my mom did.

What were the main challenges while writing the book?

It was hard to organize my thoughts. I did comprehensive research to back up what I was saying by human behavior, by psychology, by science. I wanted to build something compelling and useful. Like everybody else who writes a book for the first time, you go into it thinking, “I’m just gonna write a book!” and then you just write and write and write. When I finished, I discovered I was far from done. You need to take time away from it, and then go back to it. Then, you need to set it on fire, rewrite the whole thing, clarify your thoughts, hire a professional editor, learn about marketing and publishing, set more things on fire, reedit, and then return, return, and return. It’s been a twenty-month process. I am incredibly grateful to go through all this because, with every iteration, I was organizing my thoughts. I was getting closer to the truth. It was harder than I thought, but it was worth it: all of it.

Who was the most supportive?

Two of my best friends, because they were going through a hard time at the same time I was going through a hard time. One of them was going through depression and anxiety; another one was going through a marriage falling apart. They just wanted the same feelings of joy I was yearning for, but for different reasons. I told them what I was working on and, then I said, “Let’s try to do this together!” I decided to write down a few paragraphs so they could understand. Those paragraphs turned into 55,000 words. I remember when I had about 30,000 words, I thought: “There’s a book here! I can go the distance!” And I chose to go the distance.

Once we’d all realized that I had a book here, they started cheering me on. I’ve done an excellent job surrounding myself with incredible people that celebrate when I succeed, not just wanna hold my hand when I cry. Those are real friends. 

My husband too. He’s been super supportive the whole time. He did the 90-day program with me first, and he’s a different person. We’re different people because of my program, and we are not held back by façades anymore. We are not like, “I need to be this way because this is what the world needs me to be, or because I have to protect myself.” No, we say, “I deserve to be this way because this is who I am. And what a privilege to be me! I’m just going to be my best self because that’s the joyful life that I deserve. Period.”

Which are these six habits?

The six habits are kindness, acceptance, gratitude, presence, goodness, and intention.

Who is your book for?

For the people that achieved a certain level of success in their lives, but when they did, they discovered it was not what it was supposed to be.

For the people that lied or were lied to about what happiness was, and always chased the wrong idea. Just like me: I chased success, I chased money, I chased the perfect size two body thinking that would make me happy.

For the person that is just tired of believing lies and pursuing things that don’t resonate. This book will change that person. It can honestly work for everybody, but the people that have felt betrayed by a society that told them a bunch of lies about what happiness was, this will land better than probably anyone else.

How have readers reacted to your book?

I’m so excited. I’ve been getting five-star reviews. I’m so grateful for them, and it’s so thrilling. It’s wonderful to know that people are genuinely feeling a connection to the words and understanding that these are core life values.

Do you have any other passions?

I like to paint, and I am also an amateur photographer. My hobbies are simple: traveling alone might be the most exciting thing about me. My husband is a big fan of that because he knows I come home happy and fulfilled. I love exploring the world, meeting awesome people from different cultures, and having incredible food. I also really enjoy baking.

My passion is my family: my parents, my friends, and my life with my husband, my cat, and my dog. LOVE them! I can’t deny that I worked very hard to make this particular dream come true. I was scared about moving [to Maui], but I did the big scary thing for me, and I am glad I did.

If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?

Nothing. It unfolded exactly the way it should. The time I took to write it and perfect it, and do the research was necessary. I made mistakes I learned valuable lessons from. I wish the people who meet me now had known me three years ago, and compare her to the person I am as a result of my book and my work. Three years ago, I had so much negativity, and today, I am full of gratitude and love for everyone. So, I wouldn’t change a thing—even the bad, like my divorce, the abuse, and the bullying. I wouldn’t change any of it. Nothing, because that would change the fabric of who I am and I love who I am. 

What future projects do you have?

I’m writing a business book at some point. I’m excited to do that after 20 years in the business world, 21 now. It’s been a great adventure being an entrepreneur, and I think college is not AT ALL a place for people to learn to be anything other than a cog in a machine someone else built. Not everyone is meant for employment. I wasn’t. When I said I wanted to do my own thing, there were a lot of raised eyebrows. There were little support systems out there at the time to support me. College could introduce valuable knowledge like accounting, marketing, business.

Here’s one principle that is not being taught and will be in my book: Sometimes, your best isn’t good enough, and you must deal with that. The business world does not just hand out participation trophies. Sometimes your best doesn’t cut it, and you lose, and none is going to be there to console you. You need to figure it out, put your big girl pants on, and move on, and get better next time. So, someday, your best will be good enough, and then, eventually, your best will be better than everybody else’s best that you are competing with. The truth is people are not ready. As a result, they are terrified to be entrepreneurs, and they shouldn’t be. It’s a different framework. To be an entrepreneur requires that you are tenacious, curious, and relentless.

What message would you send to your readers?

Do the work.

That’s it. It’s worth it. It will be difficult, but it will give you all the freedom you’ve craved. You need to have the courage to face yourself. You have to be willing to do the work. The struggle is where the beauty is.

Honestly, I want every single person to be exposed to the Six Habits and to do the 90-day program because the habits that are in place now are what got you the life you are living, and for most people, the life they are living is not the one they want to be living. The book is an excellent start to awaken the mind, but the brain needs to be trained. You have to integrate these habits. It’s to do the work to change your ways and your patterns, like not flossing vs. flossing. Of course, it’s a little different than being remarkably unkind to yourself and being the bully inside your head and transforming that relationship into one of the nurturing patterns. You have to work on it and be unafraid.

Can you tell me the essential idea of the book in one sentence?

The Six Habits is a book about liberation and the things we need to do to live the life we were meant for.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I think people will benefit from giving themselves grace. The self-help world and the personal development world do so well because they operate on very predatory thinking, which is “buy my book because only my solution can help you fix what is wrong with you.” I don’t subscribe to that belief at all. Humanity perpetuates false beliefs; we push them forward generationally, and it’s not our fault. Through awareness, we can give ourselves the tools that will set us free.  You are capable of mastery. But please, don’t assume it’s simple. Just do the work. That’s it.

To start or not to start a business, that is the question. Many people who wanted to open a small business before COVID-19 found themselves in limbo, hoping for things to change or a miracle. The healthcare situation hurt most companies, big and small, and many have had considerable financial losses.

However, some businesses have thrived during the pandemic, which makes us wonder.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce released a list of businesses that have done pretty well. Among those experiencing growth: cleaning services, delivery services, drive-in movie theaters, grocery stores, liquor/wine stores, meal prep delivery services, canned and jarred goods companies, game makers and sellers, fitness equipment companies, landscaping and yard care, bread-baking companies, coffee subscription companies, gardening suppliers, mask makers, telehealth services.

Opening a related business might be an excellent decision to make.

So, is it a good time to start a business?

According to Adam Singolda in Op-Ed: Analysis of 8 billion page views shows where the next hot start-up can thrive, it is. “The news cycle is a direct reflection of what’s grabbing consumer attention in real-time,” he says. “Successful businesses will heed its advice and use it to “look outside” in times of crisis, but also how to “look inside” effectively to determine where to save costs and make responsible business choices.”

His piece describes industries that show massive growth after the COVID-19 pandemic started.

  • Consumer interest in Home Improvement has increased by 140%,
  • Consumer interest in Pet Products has increased by 50%,
  • Consumer interest in Home Beauty has increased by 36%,
  • Consumer interest in Gaming has increased by 145%,
  • Consumer interest in  Fitness and Health has increased by 2,000,000 %.

Some of these activities will only need time, courage, and dedication. For some others, you will need more significant savings, or trustworthy investors because banks are reluctant to offer loans due to the crisis.

As Annie Lowrey puts it in The Small-Business Die-Off Is Here, “… banks have been prioritizing applications from bigger clients; some have even developedconcierge treatmentoptions for wealthy firms.” She adds, “Much of the help (referring to the government relief package) has gone to the companies that need it the least, among them firms with employee counts just under the SBA caps, franchises of major chains, and publicly traded firms, which are by definition able to raise money from investors.”

Here are some pros for opening a business in related fields:

  1. These businesses will work even if COVID-19 gets contained. So, don’t worry about losing clients when scenarios change.
  2. People need these services, which makes you an asset to your clientele.
  3. Some potential new businesses will not open because their owners are still afraid, which will give you more opportunities.
  4. Some established businesses are closed, and their owners are reluctant to reopen because of the pandemic.
  5. People are eager to try something new and to help small businesses.
  6. These industries are booming right now.
  7. If you succeed, you will succeed BIG TIME.
  8. How you adapt now will work for you even past the pandemic, and also prepare you for further contingencies.

Of course, there are cons:

  1. People might still be reluctant to use certain businesses out of fear of contagion.
  2. People might be reluctant to spend money.
  3. Some people are engaging in DIY activities at home.
  4. Some people in your area might have beat you to it.
  5. It will be hard to get bank loans to set up your business.
  6. In case of not being successful, there is little chance for recovery.

With these things in mind, it is up to you to make a decision. If you open a new business, it is crucial to adapt to the current situation and make your business more attractive to people from the get-go.

Final words

Life is not going to be the same after COVID-19, at least, for the foreseeable future. Starting a new business or not, it is necessary to adjust to the new reality. If you want to start a new business, thoroughly analyze the pros and cons. You decide. Creating your safety guidelines based on the CDC instructions will help you out. You might also want to do proper research on the market capabilities of your area and your potential clients regarding the business you want to start.

Hellen Keller said: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” Taking risks will always bring uncertainty, but it will also take you places. If you want to start a new business, do everything necessary, be creative, and don’t be afraid. Give value and serve people.

What’s the future of the gig economy?

We discovered Kaylania Chapman (a.k.a. The Blessed Driver) two years ago while doing research about the gig economy for Utility Avenue. Kaylania has a Youtube Channel, The Blessed Driver, where she shares personal opinions, reviews about gig apps, creative business strategies, and so much more.

Now, as times are uncertain, she graces us with her opinion about the future of the gig economy in our country.

During these critical and uncertain times, the fate of gig workers today may seem unclear. There are a plethora of negative factors that can be compiled together in what many independent contractors are facing. However, I indeed have had to brace myself for the unknown. I first started working in the gig economy in 2014 as a house cleaner for a debunked company (now renamed Homeaglow) called HomeJoy. It was a temporary fix to earn some extra cash to support myself and my son. In 2016, I started driving for Uber and Lyft. Then I began doing food deliveries for Postmates. Instacart soon followed in late 2016, as well as other food delivery companies.

For a few years, the gig world was booming. I was making great money. I rented a condo and got a car. It was great. I chose that route because I was a single Mom and needed a flexible schedule. Without going into too much detail, things were great until mid-2019. Issues with Instacart’s insane rules, platform outages, and pay cuts hit my pockets. Food delivery companies such as Uber Eats, GrubHub, and others, began to cut pay, companies got greedy, and it wasn’t worth it anymore. I knew my season as a gig worker was soon coming to an end in 2019, and I was okay with that.

Looking back, I do not regret a thing.

I worked very hard and did the best I could. But what about today? Is there a fighting chance to make a decent buck on any of these platforms? The short answer is ‘possibly‘. Many of these gig companies hire so many workers and are often short-staffed (mostly with non-English speaking) on customer service personnel, which makes it hard for gig workers to dispute any issues. Each individual has situations they deem as acceptable or not. While many workers still earn great money, others are suffering. Some gig workers have had a hard time finding decent employment while others choose the gig economy as it fits their schedule or lifestyle.

At this current time, gig work is sparse for most. With the onslaught of people creating software and bots to steal “batches” and orders from the apps, finding what used to be quick and easy work seems rare these days. With the recent breakout of COVID-19, things slowed down a bit in the gig world but remained a bit steady for grocery delivery shoppers (and drivers), and some restaurant drivers.

I have always said to my audience on my channel on Youtube, The Blessed Driver, to pursue entrepreneurship. Allow working gig jobs to be a stepping stone to a better future; otherwise, they’ll be like a hamster in a wheel going in circles without reaching a destination.

I feel that gig work (at this current time) is more fit for college students or people needing a part-time job to earn an extra few dollars. Full time could be possible, but not likely.
Seeking a full-time job or starting your own business will be more sustainable than working on the gig platforms. Know what season you’re in, and don’t be afraid to step out into doing something better for you and your family.

You can start getting ready to reopen your business. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established guidelines to reopen America in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With extreme precaution, the government has a strategy to make the country go back to normal. As a result, people will start going out more, and places will start getting crowded again.

However, we need to keep in mind that the threat of COVID-19 remains. If you prefer to work from home, there are many work-from-home opportunities. Nevertheless, going back to business is necessary, but you should take extra precautions to avoid contagion. Social distancing is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy, and the reopening will increase the flow of people to different places. For that reason, it is essential to follow the guidelines established by the CDC. It will also be necessary to have your own set of measures in your own business to ensure your safety and that of your customers or employees.

If you are a business owner, what can you do to stay safe and also reopen your business? How can you deal with this new challenge imposed on us? We are now sharing a set of measures that you can take to stay safe as you reopen your business.

Wear masks and encourage customers to wear masks:

You and your employees can wear a mask while you do the job. Although it will not transmit a message of normalcy, we cannot forget that things are not normal anymore. Besides, it will give your customers confidence that in your workplace, you are taking the necessary measures to keep them safe. Don’t forget to change masks frequently.

Use hand sanitizer, always:

Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer nearby. Have your employees do the same and keep one at the door, so your customers disinfect their hands when they walk in.

Keep physical distancing:

With people coming into your business, it is vital to ask them to stay between six and seven feet from each other. If your business is a closed space, you can encourage them to be over seven feet.

Disinfect surfaces:

Disinfecting everyday use surfaces like doorknobs, hand railings, and touchscreens will keep people from spreading the virus if one infected customer visited your location.

Stay informed:

Staying informed about the evolution of COVID-19 and the indications of the CDC is very important to keep safe. You need to follow the news regarding the virus and also keep track of nearby testing sites. You can check all the relevant information in the BeatCovid19 app. Keep brochures and information boards at hand and visible for you, your employees, and your customers. This will help you and your customers in case someone shows symptoms.

Be vigilant:

You should monitor your health and that of your employees. Check your body temperature frequently, and go to the doctor if symptoms surface. Recommend others to do the same. Keep in mind that any outbreak in your place can damage your business if you don’t take the right measures to contain the spread of the disease. Also, designate a person responsible for the response to COVID-19.

Encourage online or phone operations:

Although many small businesses require people to go to the place, some operations can be carried out online or via phone. That way, you can lower the flow of people to your location while staying in business.

Offer home deliveries:

Whenever possible, if you sell anything and you don’t deliver yet, you may start considering it. Some people started doing it when the pandemic forced them to close their places, and they have thrived. It could also be an excellent opportunity to scale your business and find new ways to serve your clients while also following the guidelines.

Don’t panic:

Panic and paranoia will scare your clients away and bring negative energy. And that will be more harmful to your business than the restrictions and the disease. Take all the necessary precautions to be safe, but do not let the situation hurt your mood or your peace of mind.

Final Words

Bennett, in The Light in the Heart, said, “Life is about accepting the challenges along the way, choosing to keep moving forward, and savoring the journey.” Coronavirus has made life different, maybe forever, but we cannot let this discourage us. A new challenge means a unique opportunity to stand tall. Let’s stand tall together.
