Who is Odette Photo+Art?

Odette Photo+Art is a Miami based business, specializing in family and brand photography. My photography is known for documenting real connections and emotions.

How was Odette Photo+Art born?

In 2007, I got my first point-and-shoot camera and started documenting the lives of those around me.
In 2017, I started photographing my friend’s children on the weekends, and then, one day, it was not a hobby anymore.
That’s how Odette Photo + Art was born.
Today, I am a photographer, an artist, a storyteller, an entrepreneur, a dreamer, and a doer.

What were the main challenges?

Taking a photograph is just a beginning.
At first, I didn’t know anything about running a profitable business. When you are a solopreneur, you wear way too many hats. Becoming an entrepreneur and artist has been a journey. As a result, I have spent countless nights studying business, marketing, and sales.
Learning is a never-ending process. My grandfather used to say that knowledge takes no space, and that’s my mantra.
Now I want to help others.

Who is the most supportive of your business?

I have the most supportive family and friends.
My sister, my niece, and my mom are my muses, and my friends cheer up for me. They believe in me.
Without their unwavering support, I wouldn’t have been able to build two businesses from the ground up.
Family pictures
My family. My everything.

How did you become a brand photographer?

I started with family photography, and I love it! There is something extraordinary about being invited into a family to document who they are. But there is also a need for businesses everywhere to create a brand that clearly communicates why they do what they do.

What makes you different from the business across the street who does the same kind of business, but cheaper?

YOU.

You make the whole difference. Simon Sinek said it: “People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.
I can help you create a compelling brand that sells while you sleep.

My mission is to document life and to help entrepreneurs have a thriving business.

What’s branding photography?

Branding photography is the visual representation of you and your business. It establishes and enhances your brand through professional images that show your character, what it’s like to work with you, and what makes you and your business unique.

Why is it essential for a business?

Branding photography makes it a breeze for customers and future clients to know you and your brand.
You can use your on-brand photographs to enhance your online presence.
– Website
– Social media (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest)
– Email campaigns, newsletters, and email signatures
Or in traditional marketing materials:
– Print collateral (business cards, brochures, direct mail, sales sheet, flyers, magazines, newspapers)
– Sales pitches or presentations
– Press releases
The options are limitless.

What future projects does Odette Photo+Art have?

I have teamed up with brilliant minds. We are creating a virtual assistance agency to add marketing services to my branding photography packages. Additionally, we are creating a magazine to promote the work of local entrepreneurs.
I also want to create a magazine to promote female entrepreneurs.

What would you advice to other entrepreneurs?

Coronavirus has changed the way we face the world. We have had to pivot and find new ways to keep our businesses afloat.
Use this downtime wisely:
  • Read.
  • Learn something new every day.
  • Work on your website, on your client experience, on your offers.
Never stop honing your craft. Become so great at what you do that people think of you as the only choice to hire in your area of expertise.
Also, stay healthy. Wash your hands and practice social distancing. It might be painful now, but it won’t last forever. It will get better.

To Start or Not To Start a Business: That is the Question

to start or not to start a business

To start or not to start a business, that is the question. Many people who wanted to open a small business before COVID-19 found themselves in limbo, hoping for things to change or a miracle. The healthcare situation hurt most companies, big and small, and many have had considerable financial losses.

However, some businesses have thrived during the pandemic, which makes us wonder.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce released a list of businesses that have done pretty well. Among those experiencing growth: cleaning services, delivery services, drive-in movie theaters, grocery stores, liquor/wine stores, meal prep delivery services, canned and jarred goods companies, game makers and sellers, fitness equipment companies, landscaping and yard care, bread-baking companies, coffee subscription companies, gardening suppliers, mask makers, telehealth services.

Opening a related business might be an excellent decision to make.

So, is it a good time to start a business?

According to Adam Singolda in Op-Ed: Analysis of 8 billion page views shows where the next hot start-up can thrive, it is. “The news cycle is a direct reflection of what’s grabbing consumer attention in real-time,” he says. “Successful businesses will heed its advice and use it to “look outside” in times of crisis, but also how to “look inside” effectively to determine where to save costs and make responsible business choices.”

His piece describes industries that show massive growth after the COVID-19 pandemic started.

  • Consumer interest in Home Improvement has increased by 140%,
  • Consumer interest in Pet Products has increased by 50%,
  • Consumer interest in Home Beauty has increased by 36%,
  • Consumer interest in Gaming has increased by 145%,
  • Consumer interest in  Fitness and Health has increased by 2,000,000 %.

Some of these activities will only need time, courage, and dedication. For some others, you will need more significant savings, or trustworthy investors because banks are reluctant to offer loans due to the crisis.

As Annie Lowrey puts it in The Small-Business Die-Off Is Here, “… banks have been prioritizing applications from bigger clients; some have even developedconcierge treatmentoptions for wealthy firms.” She adds, “Much of the help (referring to the government relief package) has gone to the companies that need it the least, among them firms with employee counts just under the SBA caps, franchises of major chains, and publicly traded firms, which are by definition able to raise money from investors.”

Here are some pros for opening a business in related fields:

  1. These businesses will work even if COVID-19 gets contained. So, don’t worry about losing clients when scenarios change.
  2. People need these services, which makes you an asset to your clientele.
  3. Some potential new businesses will not open because their owners are still afraid, which will give you more opportunities.
  4. Some established businesses are closed, and their owners are reluctant to reopen because of the pandemic.
  5. People are eager to try something new and to help small businesses.
  6. These industries are booming right now.
  7. If you succeed, you will succeed BIG TIME.
  8. How you adapt now will work for you even past the pandemic, and also prepare you for further contingencies.

Of course, there are cons:

  1. People might still be reluctant to use certain businesses out of fear of contagion.
  2. People might be reluctant to spend money.
  3. Some people are engaging in DIY activities at home.
  4. Some people in your area might have beat you to it.
  5. It will be hard to get bank loans to set up your business.
  6. In case of not being successful, there is little chance for recovery.

With these things in mind, it is up to you to make a decision. If you open a new business, it is crucial to adapt to the current situation and make your business more attractive to people from the get-go.

Final words

Life is not going to be the same after COVID-19, at least, for the foreseeable future. Starting a new business or not, it is necessary to adjust to the new reality. If you want to start a new business, thoroughly analyze the pros and cons. You decide. Creating your safety guidelines based on the CDC instructions will help you out. You might also want to do proper research on the market capabilities of your area and your potential clients regarding the business you want to start.

Hellen Keller said: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” Taking risks will always bring uncertainty, but it will also take you places. If you want to start a new business, do everything necessary, be creative, and don’t be afraid. Give value and serve people.

So, what kind of business do you want to build?

Spotlight: Natasha Knutson Events

Utility Avenue is a platform for business owners to promote and scale their businesses. Like Robert Ingersoll, we believe we rise by lifting others. So, we have created this spotlight to encourage local businesses every week.

Today, we give you Natasha Knutson, from Natasha Knutson Events!

Natasha Knutson Events event planner

Who is Natasha Knutson? How did everything start?

I am the owner of Natasha Knutson Events: the mom of two little girls who wanted to follow her passion for design and decor and do something in life that my girls can look up to. I have always had a keen interest in event design and decor. What started as a passion for event planning turned into a business opportunity. Once I decided that it was time to head back to work, I wanted to do something that would make me happy, and I could see myself doing for the rest of my career. Event planning was the ideal choice for me because it brings me joy and fulfillment.

What aspects of your background have helped you the most?

Growing up, my mom would always throw us lavish birthday parties taking care of the most minute details. All the kids wanted to attend, and people would talk about how amazing these parties were for months on end. She also had a knack for design. People would always ask her for her opinion and help with events, decor, and even outfits. I would sit and listen to what she would suggest. It always amazed me how she made everything look so perfect. My mom would throw herself in with all her soul on all of her projects. She is my inspiration.

At the beginning, which were the main challenges?

Starting a business from the ground up is challenging. To bring all the ideas that are floating in your brain to a cohesive business plan is the first step. One of my biggest challenges was figuring out what works for my business, what the market needs are, and how best to present them to potential clients.

Who was the most supportive of your idea?

I have been incredibly lucky to have so much support from friends and family. They encouraged me to start my business and have helped me with every step. They are my biggest cheerleaders, and I wouldn’t be here without their faith in me to succeed.

Who is your primary target audience?

Anyone who is planning an event is our target audience. Be it a wedding, a corporate event, a baby shower, or any other event someone needs to take to the next level. We are here to make your event a success. All the while, making sure the host is enjoying every moment along with their guests.

With all the competition in the world right now, what makes your offer unique?

In the Event Planning Business, understanding what your client wants and bringing it to life is what makes you unique. It is the relationship that you have with your client that helps you create their big day exactly how they envisioned it.

If you could go back in time, would you change anything

I think about this a lot. I should have started this business a long time ago, but I always afraid of not succeeding, wondering how well my business would be received. We let our fears hold us back so much sometimes, and I just wish I had jumped into this business a lot sooner.

What challenges do you see ahead of you?

Given the current situation with Covid-19, there is uncertainty about how things would be soon. People are canceling events and celebrations, and things look a little bleak, but I also see the light at the end of the tunnel. People love to celebrate and have a great time. We can’t keep away from these celebrations for a very long time. Once the virus settles, we will be back up and, hopefully, come back stronger.

Have you used Utility Avenue? How would you describe your experience with the platform?

We have used Utility Avenue to interact directly with our potential clients. We can reach a significant number of potential clients and have been able to answer their questions and have had clients book us via Utility Avenue. It is an excellent resource for small business owners looking for new clients.
